It’s become clear from comments on my previous article, that Lenovo have released a new Windows 7 driver for the Ericsson F3507g Mobile Broadband card.
You would never know from glancing at the downloads page because it doesn’t list versions numbers or publish dates…
The driver is now listed under Vodafone and AT&T Wireless WAN (HSPA) Driver. Just to make things extra confusing (and harder to find) they removed the actual card model number from the description. The new filename is 7uw706ww.zip (direct download link), and comes in at 40MB (10 MB smaller than the last driver). It comes as a Setup.exe, including both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers.
After installing the new driver (no need to uninstall the previous one), you will have the following new devices in device manager:
- F3507g Mobile Broadband Driver (Network Adapters)
- F3507g Mobile Broadband Device Management (COM3)
- F3507g Mobile Broadband GPS Port (COM6)
- F3507g Mobile Broadband Device
The crucial thing about the new driver is the change in version from 4.4.50.6.0 (dated 16/12/2008) to 4.54.7103.1 (dated 26/06/2009). The drivers are also HCL certified by Microsoft. Some devices are dated 29/07/2009 and version 1.0.0.52. Either way, all the drivers are much newer
This driver is radically different from the previous one. The previous driver installs your broadband card as an old school modem (with COM ports et al). This is what made it particularly tricky to setup.
The new driver actually gets the broadband card to show up as… (drum roll)… a Mobile Broadband Connection!

The upshot of this is that, after installing these drivers you don’t need any third party software to get online!
I am not sure if this device type was available in Vista, but I have certainly never seen it before. It integrates with Windows differently to a dialup modem. One obvious change is that it shows up in the networks list accessed via the system tray like so:
![]()
You can set it to automatically connect when there is no other connection available, which is quite handy and works quite well.
There is only one trick you may need for setting the APN. To do this you need to go to the networks list and right click, show properties. Note: This is completely different than if you select properties in the Network Connections windows. You should see the following:

Here you can enter the APN and username/password if required by your ISP.
There are only a couple of negatives I have discovered so far:
- Using Wireless Manager it was possible to force the connection to only use HSDPA etc. I can’t find a way to do this with the new setup
- There is not as much status information available as when using Wireless Manager. For instance, when I am connected, it ALWAYS seems to display UMTS as the connection type, even though I know I am on HSDPA. This may or may not be a bug.
One very exciting feature that I just stumbled upon when researching this article is the Windows 7 Sensor compatible GPS Location driver that gets installed.

This new feature for Windows 7 allows applications to access your GPS data through a standard API, for example Google Chrome can use this to position you on Google maps! I have not got this to work so far but I am hoping that’s because I have no GPS signal indoors.
Overall I am happy with the new drivers – it’s certainly a better way to integrate with Windows, and the connection seems to be much more reliable.

I have X200 Tablet with F3507G, however we are having problems with all of our Optus Data SIMS, we have 2 lappies same, and have 4 Optus Data sims… they say not activated however they work in other devices for Data.
Question what service, package etc do you have on your Optus SIM for this??

Rich,
I was using a Dodo SIM (which does use the Optus network) so I am not sure I can answer your question!
There was an indication when I ordered my thinkpad that the F3507G can be shipped locked to specific networks (e.g. Vodafone was opt-in), but I don’t know if this was a software or hardware “lock”.
Have you had the sims working before in your X200?

I have a new T400s where the new mobile broadband drivers are installed. The laptop is upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. The driver is dated 2009-07-29 with version number 1.0.0.52.
Mobile Broadband works fine (without the ThinkAdvantage software). But I have problems getting the GPS working. It does not appear in “Location and other sensors”. The Lenovo GPS software shows this error message when started: “GPS NMEA Com port is not available”. In device manager Minicard GPS Port is installed on COM6 and working. The driver is dated 2008-09-29 with version number 1.0.0.28.
Any idea why the GPS does not work?

Since I upgraded from the working Vista drivers for the Ericsson F3507g to those you are mentioning (latest Win7 drivers), my UMTS-modem has disappeared (also no entry in the hardware device list). After a lot of trying, on an X200T and a W500, I have come to the conclusion that these drivers are somehow capped to 384Kbps. (UMTS).
A big letdown because I have a flat fee 7.2Mbps subscription that I cannot use at its full speed anymore.

Just loaded them on t400s – in australia on vodafone – and also getting the same “The mobile broadband network connection operation (context activation) failed with error code 0″.
It knows the network is there and tells me the signal strength but won’t connect
Figure Vodafone data services may be the next point of contact.

After several hours (including time on the phone with Lenovo Tech Support which they were unable to assist) your solution solved my issue (X200s), thank you so much! The critical step is to set the APN as mentioned above. For Australian Vodafone users this is vfinternet.au. For other Australian service providers, you can retrieve the APN from http://wiki.sakasolutions.com/index.php?title=Australia_apn. Good luck!

Hi all
In the beginning I thought that the new drivers with version 6.1.4.2 do not work. During the installation five (or six) devices are found and for two of them the driver installation will fail. Nevertheless those failed devices later never occur in the device manager. So it looks like it is not really a failing.
For all of you with the “The mobile broadband network connection operation (context activation) failed with error code 0″ problem. You MUST enter your APN correctly and maybe the username and password. Since I did that, everything is working fine. With the beta drivers and Access Connections the settings are configured automatically, but with the final drivers you MUST configure them manually. Please visit your provider’s website for the settings or use Google.
The GPS is actually working with the ThinkVantage GPS Enabler from the Lenovo website. The Guide is mentioning that you don’t have to deinstall the beta drivers. That’s just partly correct. To get WWAN working you don’t need to deinstall the beta drivers, but to get the GPS working (again) with the new drivers you MUST deinstall the beta drivers. If you don’t deinstall the beta drivers before installing the new ones, you will get a “GPS NMEA Com port is not available” error.
Furthermore I recommend to deinstall Access Connections too.
I thought 2 months that the new drivers are crap. Actually they are working if you set your APN and deinstall the old drivers (to get GPS working).
Hope this helps some of you.
Cheers,
Marc

Hi again, sorry for my ignorance. To successfully install these drivers (the very ones mentioned in the article) you need to make sure the wireless connection switch at the right side of the notebook is ON. I thought it only affects wifi, but no, it seems to switch on/off Bluetooth and mobile broadband as well.
Then the Ericsson drivers do appear in the “Network adapters” group in the device manager.
Item, to get the network list (under “drum roll”) was not too obvious either, so:
Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center
then at the left on the task panel click on Change adapter settings (this is not very intuitive for me).
To set the APN (Access Point Name) you right-click on the Mobile broadband connection in the network list and select Connect/Disconnect. *Then* you get the window saying “Currently connected to:”
In this window (not in the network list) you right click on the mobile connection entry and select Properties to access the Profile tab in the pop-up window to finally set the APN. Huhh. Then it works indeed.
For some reason Access Connections still doesn’t wanna know there is mobile broandband available.

Ok guys, seek no more.
I think i solved the problem with the “The mobile broadband network connection operation (context activation) failed with error code 0″ problem in Win7.
I got a T400s, so i did all the steps mentioned by Fanny but i couldn’t get it to work untill i realized that if you go to the wirelles network manager of Win7, click on the broadband cannection name and click properties a window pops up. Then you have to go to the 2nd tab (Profile) and in the middle there’s a drop down list, chose “Never connect automatically). That’s it, now just restart your laptop run the Access con and click connect on your mobile broadband profile.
Hope this one helps!

Hi all,
Had lots of problems with my F3507g card… sometimes after a reboot the card was not visible in Win7 dev mgr anymore. Also could not get the GPS feature to work, got “GPS NMEA Com port is not available”. Today I saw the laptops’s serial port was disabled in bios. Enabled that and now all works like a charm (at least for now..). Seems like this disabling interfered with the WWAN card somehow. Just a hint, easy and worth a try for all of you who have strange errors!

Hi and thanks a lot for all these precious information.
I have a T400s with a F3507g card. During, let’s say a month, the card appeared on Access Connections. Could be activated and deactivated. From yesterday on, the card won’t even be recognized by the system nor (of course) appear in Access Connections. I reinstalled all the drivers listed above and also the new 5.5 Access Connection with not success at all. The card doesn’t appear as a COM port. Would you or someone have any idea ? Anything would help,
Thanks a lot,
E.
p.s.: the only thing I did a few days ago was to try change the sim card for another one. The system asked for a password which I did not enter. I then put the pre-installed card back in its slot.

Hi,
For those of you that find that the card has ‘dissapeared’ – this is something that i’ve seen even under windows vista. Essentially the BIOS has turned the unit off and cannot be turned on form inside Windows7. The only way i’ve found to reliably get the card going again is to boot up under my dual boot (ubuntu) and use an acpi command wwan_enable to turn on the unit.
Have contacted Lenovo support before and was met with silence ….. Guess I need to see what exactly that ACPI call does..

I had difficulty in the sim detection at first. However after a complete shutdown and restart it asked for my PIN when I try to connect to mobile broadband via Access Connections.
The driver allows default APN settings to be used and it matches the information above for Optus. However it fails to connect to the network.
The simcard I inserted was from my Optus iPhone that has a data plan, my question is does it HAVE to be a data simcard or should all simcards from Optus work with the F3507g to go online?
Thank you so much in advance for your assistance.

The card not showing up in the device manager, etc.
But I just fixed it with ubuntu by following this great post:

@Chuck: I had the same issues with the GPS Com Port. (GPS NMEA Com port is not available) back when the 3507g card was still working (currently MIA/DOA/???).
Enabling the hardware com port in the BIOS fixed that issue…
This is the one hardware device on my W500 that I’ve been consistently underwhelmed by. Seems like a very dodgy hardware implementation…
